Guest Lecture by North Carolina Central University Adjunct Professor of Writing,
Shirley Faulkner-Springfield, Ph.D.
Dr. Faulkner-Springfield will read a chapter titled "Oh My God! He Was A Slave!" that was published in the edited collection Serendipity in Rhetoric, Writing, and Literacy Research in April 2018. Dr. Faulkner-Springfield will relate to attendees the story of how she discovered that her great-great-grandfather, Friday Faulkner, was enslaved for a period of time in Person County and Halifax County. Through intense genealogical and historical research, she reveals in her article the connection between the African American Faulkners of Person County and the first white Faulkner immigrant who arrived in the American colonies in 1622.
